About ATV Tires

I can remember the first time I was told that the tires on a quad didn't have tubes. For a moment I was confused, then I simply accepted it as the way it was. The concept of tubeless tires dates back to the early 1900's when more than one manufacturer of automotive tires patented their designs.

BF Goodrich later on would patent a much more reliable tubeless tire in the 1940's. It was their specific rubber and bead design that eventually became popular on automobiles.

about ATV tiresTubeless quad tires specifically, would actually get their start on the original Honda all terrain cycles which debuted back in 1970. Commonly referred to as balloon tires, they actually took the place of suspension on these early ATC's.

Their effectiveness on rough terrain was well received. As an additional benefit the tubelss tire was actually easy on the environment and provided better traction on muddy or snowy off-road surfaces.

The original balloon style design eventually would give way to the modern day designed quad tire. Today's quad tires are mounted on steel or aluminum rims, with the bead sealed perfectly against the rim to prevent air loss. Their overall design allows them to be inflated to a low pressure which still provides some cushion even with today's more advanced suspension.

These modern day quad tires are also more puncture resistant than the older style balloon tires first planted on the Honda ATC's of the 1970's.
