Cheap ATV Coils
This is a great source for quad coils for generic brand quads including aftermarket replacement ignition parts as well as oem, stock ignition coils.
There is an opportunity here to find coils for many of the budget brands and defunct Chinese atv's from names like Apex, Pantera, Kasea, Eton, Sunner, Herchee, etc.
These coils and other ignition parts however may need to be matched up by the engine size and spec.
The eBay website has added some new features including an email notification system. This enables you to be notified by email when a certain coil or part is listed by a private party or commercial seller.
OEM ATV Coils
OEM ATV coils are available from the larger Japanese, American, and Canadian manufacturers.
Although they do stock various aftermarket ignition parts, they are a good source for genuine, stock coils and ignition parts for all Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki, and Yamaha quads.
The ignition coil can be a source of troubleshooting confusion for some ATV mechanics, but it is really a simple device. OEM coils are the preferred choice for most ATV enthusiasts because they are proven to work with the remainder of the original ignition system.
Some owners will insist on OEM only. Mojo Moto offers reasonable prices on OEM parts for those who use only original parts for their repair. They ship from the West coast and they claim to provide some of the fastest order fufillment and delivery.
About ATV Coils
Your engine won't start or even think about running without a coil that is functioning as it was designed. An ATV, or quad coil can be defined as two encased coils of wire, that convert a pulse of voltage from an external source into a much higher voltage required to create an arc across the gap of the spark plug.
Your quad's coil is simple to troubleshoot if you know how to test it. This coil troubleshooting process will take the guesswork out of this functionality of this critical ATV ignition component.
Bench testing your quad's coil is a simple process that will determine if your ignition coil is shorted to ground, or if it contains an open circuit. This test only requires a multimeter and the basic knowledge of how to use it. The ATV coil is constructed of two coils electrically isolated from eachother, officially called windings.
The primary winding is connected to the two small terminals. Place a multimeter across these two terminals while in the "ohms" setting. A reading of "OL" or infinity indicates an open primary coil. A reading of 5 to 50 ohms would indicate the coil has continuity. You will need to check your service manual for the exact reading.
It is important to note that even if the coil's resistance is slightly off from the original spec, it should be replaced. The secondary coil is checked for resistance by inserting one meter lead into the plug wire and the other on the small terminal. a reading of "OL" on a digital muultimeter (or infinity on an analog meter) indicates an open secondary coil.
A reading of 5 to 50 ohms would indicate the coil is electrically connected but again you will need the exact spec from your service manual to determine if the reading is accurate.
