About ATV Brakes

It can be difficult to locate brakes for obsolete or defunct ATV's for this reason.

Pads and shoes have to be one of the most often replaced parts on any brand of ATV. Obviously, brake pads and shoes are wearable parts that are designed to perform a task for a definite amount of time.

Brake shoes are associated with a the drum brake. Brake pads are associated with a disc brake and caliper system. Both of these designs have their advantages however the disc brake caliper system seems to be more likely to withstand harsh riding conditions and extreme use.

On the drum brake side, they actually produce better brake force per square inch than a similarly sized disc brake. They can also house an emergency brake within the unit.

On the other hand, disc brakes have been proven to be more reliable than the drum brake stystem and do not require any adjustment. They are also easier for a novice mechanic to service.
