About ATV CDI Boxes
Well, it's actually a number of components working together in harmony. But one component in that ignition system seems to stand out. The CDI box (or CDI unit) is a key player on the ignition team. CDI is the acronym for capacitive discharge ignition.
The CDI unit is designed and engineered to take the place of the old points and distributor style mechanical ignition. These antiquated mechanical ignitions worked well until they wore out. Essentially, the contact points get burned from repetitive firing and they require adjustment and replacement after certain periods of use. The CDI box is a solid-state electronic version of this ignition. Your quad's CDI provides much more longevity than the old ignition design thanks to the absence of moving parts.
The CDI unit does have its drawbacks. It's hard to say just how many CDI units are replaced unnecessarily in ATV's thanks to the lack of troubleshooting guides by most quad manufacturers. This may be the only.downfall of the infamous CDI box.
