About ATV Bearings

They perform many tasks however friction reduction is the main goal of any bearing system. Every ATV contains a multiude of bearings, many of these are sealed bearings which are permanently lubricated.

Sealed bearings cannot be serviced. They have a lifespan that is dictated by their application and the stress that is applied during normal operation.

There are actually quite a few different styles of bearing in use on every ATV. There are ball bearings, thrust bearings, cylindrical bearings, and needle bearings. These components are contained with the engine as well as externally in the steering and suspension systems as well as other miscellaneous locations on the ATV.

Open bearings are bearings that may require periodic lubrication. They are normally protected from the environment by an exernal oil seal of dust cap. This style of bearing may actually provide more service than a sealed bearing if it is manintained properly and lubricated at the recommended intervals.
